On my last day of high school in South Africa, I hosted the ‘school dance’ afterparty at Durban’s Bargo nightclub… home to some of Durban’s best deep, funky, soulful house, dress up, themed parties, swishy bang bangs and all night long dancing!
That night, I was offered a job to start at Bargo and their partner club Tilt the next day. This Lucky moment opened up a path which in its own special way, lead to the Lucky Life I live today. I had some of my greatest moments working there, met some of of my favourite friends, and danced some of the longest nights… sometimes even a cheeky 2-4am solo session after all night studying at University.
Recently, I heard a rumour that two of my hero DJ’s that frequented my favourite dance music venues, Mimi Kesaris and Green Jnr, were venturing this side of the world. I could easily just catch up with them for a beer and a sunset on their visit, but, I decided it’s my turn to give thanks to them for the hours of dance, for driving the scene so long ago, and inspiring me to do what I do today.
These DJ’s are some of the legends that introduced me to the goodness of deep house and dance music. From the all nighters I worked behind the bars of well renowned Bargo and Tilt Nightclubs ran by Nick Dranius and Mark aka Garuni, managed by my man Brandon Shaw in Durban, to many of South Africa’s biggest dance parties, I’ve been a fan since the late 90’s, dancing to their quality deep house sets in Durban while dreaming of a lucky life in Ibiza. So its an honour to host them alongside Lucky Life Music Label Boss Ben Fhurst on their debut ibiza tour.
A recent mix by Mimi Kesaris and Green Jnr b2b warming up for Edu Imbernon in South Africa:
This weekend, 8-10 June, we take Mimi Kesaris and Green Jnr on tour in Ibiza. The weekend includes 3 special sets. A sunset rooftop session in the South West of the Island & a Pioneer DJ radio show recording on Friday, our Cirque de la Nuit label take over on Saturday, and, to end off the weekend in style, they play the world famous Cafe Del Mar Ibiza alongside resident DJ’s Ken Fan and Sebastian Hanisch.
With over 45 years combined DJ experience between them, Mimi Kesaris & Green Jnr have been household names in the South African deep house scene. Having had successful solo careers since the 80’s and 90’s, they later teamed up in 2010 sharing a distinct passion and unwavering approach to pushing underground house music. Mimi Kesaris is also well known for his classic ‘Deep Down and Sold Out’ albums that we loved across SA, so we’re looking forward to hearing how the boys have moved along with the times, and of course, hearing a classic or two dropped in the mix.
